Abstract
This article presents a juvenile work by José Benito Churriguera (1665-1725): the choir stalls of the now-disappeared convent of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Order of Preachers) in Madrid, carved in 1688-1691 and apparently destroyed in 1872. The reference was published in Vida, virtudes y exercicios del Illmo. y Revmo. Sr. D. F. Thomás Reluz, obispo de Oviedo (Life, virtues and exercises of His Grace Thomas Reluz, bishop of Oviedo), by Friar Manuel José de Medrano, a rare edition published in Oviedo in 1718. During this research the relationship of the Churrigueras with the Dominicans and Bishop Reluz has been examined, allowing for the clarification of the circumstances of the involvement of José Benito and his sons in the architectural works of this convent, which traditionally has been attributed to them.
