Abstract

Gregorio Vásquez de Arce y Ceballos (1638-1711) has been considered, due to his prolific production, the greatest colonial painter of the New Kingdom of Granada. His first biography was written in 1859 by Juan Manuel Groot and was later disseminated by Alberto Urdaneta through the first National Fair of 1886 and the Papel Periódico Ilustrado. Finally, in 1926, Roberto Pizano wrote a new text analyzing the painter's work from personal observation. Through these texts, Vasquez is seen as a founding hero of the arts in Colombia, as a function of certain national ideals of the Conservative Republic.
