Abstract

Based on the correlation between the work function and the Fermi level of electrons in a single phase, Fermi levels in electrolytes are defined. With the vacuum level above the electrolyte as the reference state, an absolute scale of redox potentials can be derived. It is outlined how such data can be obtained experimentally.
