Abstract
Objective. To determine effective treatment with dihidroyoduro de etilendiamina, correlating exposure time with detached parasites and identifying the ectoparasites that cause infection in the Pacific fat sleeper fish Dormitator latifrons. Materials and methods. In a culture system in Sinaloa (Mexico), it was observed that the Pacific fat sleeper had a lack of appetite and erratic swimming. Skin smear samples were taken from the fish to identify the cause of mortality. Five experimental treatments were established in triplicate, with immersion baths with dihidroyoduro de etilendiamina at a concentration of 0.2 g/L for all treatments; TH1 (1 h), TH2 (3 h), TH3 (6 h), TH4 (12 h), and TH5 (24 h) and a Negative Control (CTS) which did not receive treatment with protector. In the end, skin and gill smears were taken for observation in the laboratory to establish their effectiveness. In addition, a global, systematic bibliographic search of ten years on methods of control of this ectoparasite was carried out. Results. The crustacean ectoparasite Argulus sp. was identified as the agent of infection in D. latifrons. A clear correlation between the exposure time and the number of parasites released is shown (p<0.05). Conclusions. The most effective treatment without affecting the welfare of the fish for the control of ectoparasites with the skin protector dihidroyoduro de etilendiamina was TH3 (6h) (p<0.05). The countries with the most studies worldwide on treatments for the control of Argulus sp. are Indonesia and India.
