A framework to support prioritisation of music therapy resources in an acute paediatric healthcare setting

Abstract

Introduction: This manuscript introduces a prioritisation framework that was developed at The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne (RCH). Grounded in the principles of beneficence, family-centred care, and the Musical Self, the framework compromises seven Considerations for Prioritisation to support explicit clinical decision-making. Methods: The framework was reflexively developed by the music therapy clinicians at the RCH based on clinical expertise and the unique presenting needs of patients who are referred to the music therapy service. The Considerations for Prioritisation were piloted within clinical practice before the framework was finalised. Illustrative case scenarios are included to demonstrate the implementation of the framework across various clinical specialities. Results: The prioritisation framework offers a structured approach to support explicit decision-making regarding the effective allocation of music therapy resources. This allocation of resources ultimately supports optimal patient benefit while reducing the potential for moral distress among music therapists. Discussion: Prioritisation of patient referrals is common in music therapy practice, and ongoing discourse is critical to mitigate clinician moral distress, ensure effective resource allocation, and maximise patient benefit in complex healthcare settings.
