Abstract

We demonstrate how lasers can be applied for processing of sapphire. Due to its hardness, sapphire is difficult to process with mechanical tools and laser processing is the tool of choice. Based on this example, we show how novel laser material processes are being qualified and how different material qualities as well as process requirements regarding speed and accuracy define an applicative solution consisting of a combination of laser source and processing optics. Thus, one thing becomes particularly apparent: application know‐how matters.
