Abstract

Gasification has been receiving interest on a global scale due to its varied uses and benefits. Hydrogen has been also found to be one of the promised fuels that can be produced by gasification. So, coal and biomass gasification has been studied widely. Energy conversion systems based on the use of biomass are of particular interest to science because of their potential to reduce global CO2 emissions. It has been found that BG is an efficient and sustainable route for the production of hydrogen. However, the market for biomass gasification is not yet developed sufficiently for widespread use. There is still a stage of diversity, and no dominating design has emerged. Thus, tar formation and high energy could be issues for implementing BG on a large scale. On the other hand, coal gasification is commercial technology and produces a high amount of syngas and a low cost of production compared to the BG. Therefore, this paper aims to make an overview of both processes in terms of technology and the perspective of their future.
