Abstract

As briefly reviewed above, this collection covers issues in various aspects of phonological contrast. It is convincingly demonstrated that the three main areas of the book, theory, perception, and acquisition, are firmly related to each other in phonological studies. Another insight presented is that despite its long history, the study of phonological contrast still involves a number of issues that offer profound suggestions for phonological inquiry. Readers will be convinced that just as in the past, contrast will continue to occupy a central role in phonology while also impacting other linguistic fields. © 2010, The English Linguistic Society of Japan.
