Abstract
Background and Aims: To provide information on the risk factors and management associated with neona-tal jaundice with the objective of identifying potentially modifiable risk factors to reduce the morbidity from this condition. Methods: Patients of jaundice admitted in paediatrics ward, Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College for Women, Sonepat for a period of 4 months formed the sample population i.e. 100 patients. Microsoft word and SPSS software were used for statistical significance. Results: More common risk factors for severe hyper-bilirubinemia were male sex, prematurity, exclusive breast-feeding, birth asphyxia, low birth weight, non-institutional delivery and neonatal vaginal delivery. Phototherapy was done in 89 neonates, 10 neonates were given conservative treatment and 1 was referred to higher centre for exchange transfusion. Conclusions: Several known risk factors for neonatal jaundice were confirmed in this study. It is very essential for health care professionals to be aware of all potential risk factors so that the disease is detected and treated early.
