Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted both in Maradi region, Dakoro district and in Dosso region, Doutchi district in Niger. The objective was to assess the main species of Acrididae consumed and provide information on sources of collection as well as the quantity consumed. Methodology and results: A questionnaire focused on the characteristics of the area, the collection methods and species of locusts Acrididae and the quantity collected. Thus, data collection on locusts Acrididae consumed in Niger was carried out in six villages of Dakoro district (Northern part) and four villages in Doutchi department (western part). The results show that the collection of locusts is performed manually and it is an activity carried out at 70% by women; 25% of children and 5% of adult men in the villages of Doutchi department. While, in the villages of Dakoro district, the locusts are collected for more than 50% by adult males, 35% of girls aged 15 to 30 years and 12% of boys aged child from 15 to 20 years. Women perform most often buy from the local market. Wholesalers have to travel down into local markets or in the villages for buying locust with women and sell they back to retailers in major cities Niamey, Maradi and Tahoua. Frequently locust species collected in both areas are Ornithacris turbida cavroisi, Anacridium melanorhodon and Accanthacris ruficornis citrina. On average 2230+or-800 to 2244+or-129 g of locusts are collected by collector between 7 and 9 am respectively in the department of Dakoro and Doutchi. Conclusion and application: This study was conducted as part of natural resources management through used in the fight against malnutrition and food insecurity.
