Abstract

In a series of experiments, rats were given Pavlovian conditioning while curarized, with a US of rewarding intracranial stimulation. Transfer to instrumental responding for food reward was then assessed by presenting the Pavlovian CSs during operant sessions. In none of the studies reported was there evidence of any sizable transfer effects, despite the predictions of various two-factor theories and despite previous findings that the identical conditioning operations have effects on general (noninstrumental) activity. © 1980, The Psychonomic Society, Inc..
