Abstract

Palm shell waste provides an alternative as a material for asphalt mixture. Which can be used as a substitute for fine aggregate in the Hot Rolled Sheet Wearing Course (HRS-WC) mixture. HRS-WC is a hot asphalt mixture with gaps with and a large percentage of fine aggregate. The purpose of this study was to calculate the Optimum Asphalt Content (KAO) and the value of Marshall Immersion Residual Strength Index (IKS) from the mixture of HRS-WC without using palm shells and using palm shell as a substitute for fine aggregate. This study conducted 2 variations of immersion, for 24 hours (standard) and 48 hours (modification) at a temperature of 60 ° C. The variations of the palm shells used in this study were 2.5%, 5% and 7.5%, with variations in asphalt content from 5.0% to 8.0%. Based on volumetric and Marshall parameters, variation of 0% palm shell obtained 7.55% KAO value, 2.5% palm shell obtained 7.81% KAO value, 5% palm shell obtained 7.91% KAO value , and 7.5% palm shell obtained KAO value is 8.335%. The HRS-WC mixture with 2.5% palm shell variations had the highest Residual Strength Index value, 94.29% for immersion for 24 hours and 93.41% for 48 hours, exceeding the minimum IKS which is 90%. The performance of palm shells at the 2.5% variation has better results than other variations of palm shells, so it can be said that palm shells are suitable for use as a substitute for fine aggregate, especially in the HRS-WC mixture.
