Abstract
The RCPE has a long tradition of supporting evidence-based practice through the development of clinical guidelines. The UK Consensus Conference format was introduced in 1995 to provide a means of distilling research evidence in areas of clinical uncertainty to provide standards for clinical practice and identify areas for further research. The conferences do not seek to be comprehensive but to focus on a limited number of key areas by means of posing five key questions. These questions are set by the organising committee chaired by a College fellow with expertise in the field aided by four other healthcare professionals from different aspects of the field of interest (e.g. secondary care, primary care, academic medicine, specialist nursing and patient representatives) and two college representatives. © 2010 The Author(s).
