Abstract

In 2013, reports of dead and dying sea stars along the Pacific Coast of North America had researchers worried that something was seriously wrong. Scientists had seen die‐offs of starfish before, but this was one of the biggest ever recorded. Millions of sea stars, from Alaska to Mexico, succumbed to a wasting disease that reduced their arms to a gooey mush.
