Abstract

The application of Raman Spectroscopy (RS) as a high spectral resolution method for the analysis of surface phonons is discussed in this article. As an example, Raman scattering from surface phonons on the clean InP(110) surface is presented. For this model system, which is well understood with respect to atomic, vibronic and electronic structure, it is demonstrated that eigenfrequencies as well as symmetries of surface phonons obtained by RS are in good agreement with theoretical calculations. Due to the high spectral resolution of RS two localized surface modes in the gap between acoustic and optical bulk branches and a third one slightly above the bulk optical branches at the I-point are identified. Furthermore electronic surface properties are accessible by exploiting the resonance behaviour of the scattering intensities.
