Abstract

Infrared and Raman spectra of CsCl-AlCl3 melts containing oxides are reported and discussed. It was anticipated that several oxide-bearing species exist in chloroaluminate melts, depending on the acidity. A weak Raman band at ∼265 cm-1 and several infrared bands of medium intensity were observed and tentatively interpreted. The coordination geometry of oxochloroaluminate complexes is discussed and it is concluded that much experimental work is needed before the complicated chemistry of oxochloroaluminate melts is understood.
