Abstract

Salt toxicosis/water deprivation develops when swine are deprived of voluntary intake of water, especially if sodium consumption is high. Gradual restoration of plasma sodium concentration to within reference limits is necessary to avoid precipitation or exacerbation of neurologic signs. Administration of a high-sodium crystalloid solution may be an effective treatment for this condition.
