Abstract
Understanding the various compounds that make up dissolved organic matter in natural waters was once considered an intractable problem. Jerry Leenheer of the U.S. Geological Survey and Jean-Philippe Croué of France's University of Poitiers describe the new analytical techniques that are beginning to shed light on these complex materials.
