Abstract

SESSION TITLE: Comorbidities of OSA PostersSESSION TYPE: Poster PresentationsPRESENTED ON: Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 01:15 PM - 02:15 PMPURPOSE: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) share clinical outcomes being in this way a major public health concern. OSA may be under-recognised comorbidity of DM, so recent reports have indicated that the majority of patients with type 2 diabetes also have obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA). The aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of diabetes mellitus between patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.METHODS: We examined 151 patients diagnosed to our Sleep Laboratory Center, between January to December 2012, with OSA by nocturnal cardio-respiratory poligraphy (apnea hypopnea index - AHI, oxygen saturation - SpO2, lowest SpO2, oxygen desaturation index - ODI being registered) and we screened all this patients for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Including criteria was cut-off value of ≥15 events/h according to the Apnea Hypopnea Index.RESULTS: Ninety-nine patients (65.56%) had severe OSAS (≥30 events/h); 100 patients (66.22%) had type 2 diabetes mellitus (62 males, 38 females). The average of: apnea hypopnea index was 43.85±16.84; SpO2 average was 91.57±3.17; ODI was 36.75±10.85; lowest SpO2 was 74.20±13.82; body mass index was 36.41±7.26. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis reveals statistic significance for: age (p<0.01,AUC=0.69), neck circumference (p<0.01, AUC=0.67), abdominal circumference (p<0.01,AUC=0.70),BMI (p<0.01,AUC=0.70), glicemia (p=0.03,AUC=0.59), medium O2 saturation (p<0.01, AUC=0.70),oxigen desaturation index (p<0.01, AUC=0.63) and ESS (p=0.03, AUC=0.5). We found a statistically significant association between diabetes mellitus and OSA severity (p=0.037).CONCLUSIONS: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is frequent between patients with obstructive sleep apnea, especially in moderate and severe forms of OSA.CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Bidirectional relationship will be appropriate in clinical practice so, patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus should be screened for OSA and patients with OSA should also be evaluated for type 2 diabetes mellitus.DISCLOSURE: The following authors have nothing to disclose: Doina Adina Todea, Paraschiva Postolache, Andreea Codruta Coman, Loredana Elena RoscaNo Product/Research Disclosure Information.
