Abstract

Self incompatibility in Lolium perenne is shown to be controlled by a complicated multifactorial system with at least three loci. Pollen control is gametophytic. The growth of incompatible pollen tubes is usually inhibited on the stigmatic surface. The incompatibility mechanism does not appear to be particularly strong, since partial self-compatibility is found in some plants. © 1976 The Genetical Society of Great Britain. All rights reserved.
