Abstract
The intake of fluid and electrolytes is an integral part of nutritional support. Normal electrolyte requirements during maintenance of nutritional support must be frequently adjusted according to the clinical situation. Knowledge of pathophysiology as well as clinical experience is a necessary condition for safe and effective water and electrolyte administration. © 2008 European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism.
