Abstract

A new model is proposed to describe the deoxidation kinetics in turbulent melts by postulating that for aluminum deoxidation of steel the coalescence of the inclusion particles is the rate controlling mechanism. In essence, this model combines a coalescence theory proposed by P. G. Saffman and J. S. Tuner with a recently developed computational algorithm for representing turbulent, recirculatory flow. The predictions based on the model were found to be in reasonable agreement with measurements obtained in both a 50 t ASEA - SKF furnace and in a 20 kg laboratory scale unit.
