Abstract

Solids handling is as old as civilisation, yet the technology is still incomplete because of the vast number of interacting variables that influence bulk material behaviour. Powder behaviour is dependent on so many aspects: the bulk properties are determined by the packing of the particles, bulk density, friction and shear strength. Measuring the characteristics allows knowledge-based decisions to be made to establish correct equipment design for storage and handling. The 'spider' diagram offers a useful comprehensive image of the physical characteristics of a bulk solid. Effective solids handling is key to operation of plant where safety of personnel and integrity of product in the right place at the right time are paramount.
