Abstract

In less than 25 years the employer lead vocational training has faced huge evolutions. This implies not only the characteristics of the trainees but also rate of return of the training. Examining the 4 waves of the French national survey «training, qualification, professions » from 1997 to 2003, one can notice a decreasing number of those gaining a degree, a shortening of the training duration. The training does not seems to follow the classical human capital investment rules. Seniority, which was not significant in 1997 becomes, in the last wave, a key variable, however only for those who gain access to firm based vocational training, even if this training is a short duration spell (less than 40 hours for 3/4 of the trainees). This could be explained by the changes on the labour market in the 90's as well as by the changes in work organization. One of the consequence is the evolving role of the training and of the mobility in the internal labour markets in the last period.
