Abstract

In Part I of this work (Wear, 6 (1963) 5-21) it was stated that erosion consists of two types of wear: deformation and cutting wear. For the former a formula was derived containing two constants expressing the influence of the mechanical properties of the eroded substance. In this part, equations are deduced for cutting wear, containing two new constants: C, which represents the hardness of the eroded substance, and Q, which describes the plastic-elastic behaviour of the material. The combination of the two types of wear is discussed and the equations are shown to agre with the results of experiments on hard and brittle, and on soft and ductile materials. Several erosion phenomena are explained by the formulae, and indications are given for preventing or reducing erosion in practice. © 1963.
