Abstract

patients' unconscious signals about what they are thinking and feeling, is not culturally biased or evidence-based. Different cultures have dif-ferent ways of communicating unconsciously, and different rules about conscious and uncons-cious communication, which limits the appli-cation of Neighbour's lexicon in a culturally complex environment. Finally, I found the frequent use of Zen Buddhist koans and stories more distracting than useful, given the very practical construction of this useful training manual. The Inner Consultation is a practical training manual that helps physicians meet the people who are patients where they are, and helps physicians consult and communicate more effectively. In doing so, it helps realize the expectations of both patients and physicians, although those expectations are very different indeed.
