Abstract

This article proposes a robust unit commitment (RUC) model for multiple types of energy sources based on the optimal uncertainty set. These energy sources are wind farms, thermal, hydro, natural gas, nuclear, and pumped-storage hydro power plants. The RUC model addresses the impact of wind power fluctuations on power system scheduling. The methods proposed in this article are applied to a Southern island power grid of China for the purpose of demonstration. The simulation results demonstrate the economic benefits of the RUC model and optimal uncertainty set. Lastly, a study is conducted on the effects of pumped-storage hydropower plants. This study reveals that pumped-storage hydropower plants are capable of load shifting, which reduces cost and increases power generation efficiency.
