Abstract

This study aimed at identifying some correlates of students' performances in chemical problem-solving at the secondary school level. The sample consisted of 260 fifth form chemistry students randomly selected from two urban schools and two rural schools in Anambra State, Nigeria. The research instruments were three written tests, an attitude scale and the Group Test of Logical Thinking (Tobin & Capie, 1981). The analyses of the students' written responses revealed that students' attitudes, possession of the relevant chemical and mathematical knowledge/skills and ability to think logically were significantly related to students' performances in problem-solving. © 1993, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
