Recent phenomena of accelerated urban growth often have a violent impact in the image of the city. Inhabitants’ response to the lack of solutions from the authorities is automatic: They take charge and give solutions through the self-construction of a spontaneous, informal city, born out of everyday needs and limited resources. Through case studies in Lima (Peru), this article analysis the sources of inspiration for this informal architecture, identifies with the term “huachafa”, it’s processes of creation, and the ways in which it multiplies. We conclude that references can be found in architectonic elements of projects built in formal neighbourhoods, and in traditional environments. We aim to establish a relationship between formal aspects, and social and cultural realms, throughout the evolution of huachafo housing.
