Abstract

Introduction: This study optimises cold asphalt mixes using RAP (Recycled Asphalt Material) and tyre dust from Quito Airport with KAOAMIN12 additive, seeking a sustainable solution for road maintenance that reduces waste and costs, while improving pavement performance. Methodology: The research was experimental with a factorial design to optimise the cold asphalt mix. The percentages of RAP and tyre dust were varied, and mechanical properties were evaluated using the Marshall test, analysing stability, flow and strength to determine the optimum proportion of recycled materials. Results: The results indicated that the stability of the asphalt mixture decreases as the percentage of tyre dust increases. The highest stability (1750 lb) was obtained with 1% dust, while 2% resulted in the lowest stability (1283.33 lb). The incorporation of RAP and tyre dust with KAOAMIN12 showed a reduction in cost and waste, improving pavement performance. Discussion and Conclusions: The research demonstrates the feasibility of using recycled materials, such as RAP and tyre dust, in cold asphalt mixes, optimising pavement performance and contributing to sustainability in road maintenance.
