Abstract

A study investigated the need to recruit and retain a diverse faculty. Data were obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of 12 Association of American Universities member institutions. Findings revealed that despite some improvements, women and minority faculty members face severe problems in academe. Findings showed that underrepresentation still exists and that the "chilly climate" for minority and women faculty members is still pervasive. Recommendations for improving the recruitment and retention of women and minority faculty are presented.
