Vaginal hysterectomy

Abstract

The first vaginal hysterectomy was performed by Joseph Récamier at the Hôtel Dieu Hospital in Paris on July 26, 1829. The procedure became widely popular at the end of the 19th century. In the 20th century, thanks to progress in general anesthesia, asepsis, and instrumentation, abdominal hysterectomy was developed to the detriment of the vaginal approach.
