Abstract
Starting point for the design of effective and flexible learning environments are the limitations and possibilities of human memory. The instructional design of these environments considers 1) the transiency of sensory memory and working memory, 2) the limitations of working memory and 3) the organization of long term memory. In this presentation, the role of prior knowledge (i.e., long term memory) in subsequent learning and the design of effective multimedia messages or hypermedia environments are discussed. Furthermore, a view on how to bring effective instructional strategies together in flexible learning environments will be outlined based on our research in that area.
