Abstract

Constituem objeto de análise deste texto as relações entre estado, sociedade e educação superior no Brasil Império. Destaca o quanto a formação social escravocrata e a constituição de um estado oligárquico inviabilizaram a criação da universidade no país, limitando a educação superior a cursos de formação profissional, cujas características resistiram às mudanças ocorridas no país, adentraram o século XX, persistindo suas marcas até o presente.This text analyses the relations between State, Society and Higher Education during the Empire days in Brazil. It points out how much the slave system and the constitution of an oligarchic state contributed to making unfeasible the creation of universities in the country, limiting Higher Education to vocational programs, whose characteristics have withstood changes which occurred in the country, reached the XXth century, with its marks persisting until today.
