Abstract
Livestock production systems in developing countries are characterized by low productivity, which is attributed to several factors. This article analyzes the technical efficiency and the factors that bring about inefficiency in small-scale broiler production in Mutare district, Zimbabwe, to find possible areas for improvement. We used a Cobb-Douglas function of the stochastic frontier production model to analyze data from 188 small-scale broiler producers in Mutare’s peri-urban areas. Key findings indicated an average mortality rate of 9.3%, with technical efficiency ranging between 28% and 99% and an average of 93%. The age of the project manager, tertiary education, household size, restricted feeding method and extension access were positively related to technical inefficiency. Conversely, larger batch sizes, training in broiler production, and reliance on private extension services effectively reduced technical inefficiencies in broiler production. The study highlights the need for continuous investment in broiler training programs and policies encouraging knowledge sharing among producers. Optimum feeding through the ad libitum feeding method should be promoted, and batch sizes should be increased for cost reduction. Private company extension agents should be embraced for tailored advice to reduce high mortality rates and help improve technical efficiency in broiler farming.
