Abstract

Stress is a process of adaptation to the new environment. Several phenomena and studies show that stress increases in dental students in the first year, accompanied by negative effects on academics and health. The most appropriate way to reduce the negative effects of stress on new students is by Cognitive-behavioral stress management. The objective of this research is to study the effectiveness of the Cognitive-behavioral method as stress management in decreasing stress among the first-year students at the Dental School UMY. The type of research was quasi-experiment with pretest-intervention-posttest design. The sample consisted of 40 first-year students at Dental School UMY chosen through purposive sampling. The analysis was done using the Wilcoxon test since the data distribution was not normal. The research indicated that there was a significant difference before and after being treated with stress management with its probability value of 0,000 (p<0,05). The average result indicated a decreasing value of 9,60. It can be concluded that the cognitive-behavior method is effective as stress management in decreasing the level of stress among first-year students of Dental School UMY.
