Abstract

Polysaccharides can be categorized under two groups which are (i) storage polysaccharides and (ii) structural polysaccharides. These carbohydrate materials can be used in various applications and hence lead to high demand. Therefore, this chapter will highlight patents that have been granted on the utilization of polysaccharides either in their pristine form or in their derivatives in the field of medicine, cosmetic, battery, and paper industry. Its excellent properties, such as high thermal resistance, rigidity, and low thermal expansion, caused this material categorized as smart materials. Most of the patents that had been discussed in this chapter were based on the search in Espacenet, Google, and Lens.org patent databases. Based on the number of patents search, we found interest in the incorporation of polysaccharide and its derivative has been an urge in the fabrication of polysaccharide-based products.
