Abstract

In a wide-ranging review of fabric shade products, new synthetic fabrics and innovative structural changes make shade products more durable and versatile, with long-lasting, energy-efficient design features for residential and commercial use. The major energy performance characteristic is control of solar heat gain, which in turn results in air-conditioning cost savings of up to 25%. Winter usage reduces drafts and cuts fuel usage. Tests by the National Bureau of Standards are quoted. The views of executives from European Rolling Shutters and Childres Custom Canvas Products Inc. are quoted, with the latter counseling construction and budget planners on the possible savings on large multi-family projects with many windows. The structure, design, positioning and color of awnings for maximum efficiency are discussed by the University of Arizona School of Architecture. The materials used and use of retractable structures are also surveyed with their advantages. There is extensive discussion of environmental issues and sustainable design.
