Abstract

The purpose of this article is to describe family law from the point of view of legal anthropology. From this description, a complete understanding will be obtained regarding the purpose, function, and role of law in the life of a multicultural society. The sociological narrative method is the choice in presenting this paper. The implication is that law from an anthropological perspective is studied as an integral part of the culture as a whole, and therefore the law is studied as a product of social interaction that is influenced by other cultural aspects, such as politics, economics, ideology, religion, social structure, kinship. and others or law is studied as a social process that takes place in people's lives. It can be concluded, the law from an anthropological perspective is not merely in the form of statutory regulations created by the state (state law), but also the law in the form of local regulations originating from a custom of society (customary law/folk law), including within it regulatory mechanisms in society (self-regulation) which also functions as a means of social control.
