Abstract

Some variations to the reported mode of larval eclosion of Lyctus brunneus (Stephens) and Lyctus planicollis LeConte and the embryonic development and early larval activity of Lyctus discedens Blackburn, Lyctus africanus Lesne and Minthea rugicollis (Walker) have been observed. Some further data are presented to explain the purpose of the mandibular grooving of the wood surface by L. brunneus. Diagnostic characters for the sexing of L. discedens are described and observations on sex ratios, and other aspects of the biology of the five lyctid species have been made.
