Oral health management for post-cancer therapy patients

Abstract

Cancer treatments such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery play a crucial role in oncology but are frequently associated with persistent and complex oral complications. This article provides a comprehensive overview of post--treatment dental care strategies, synthesizing expert consensus, clinical guidelines, and current research. It addresses key complications including oral mucositis, xerostomia, dysgeusia, radiation-induced caries, oral candidiasis, osteora-dionecrosis (ORN), and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). Interdisciplinary collaboration between oncologists, dentists, and allied health professionals is shown to significantly improve patient outcomes. Innovative therapies such as low-level laser therapy, salivary stimulants, and remineralizing agents are explored alongside preventive and restorative measures. Individualized, multidisciplinary oral care is essential to preserve function, minimize complications, and enhance the quality of life in cancer survivors.
