Abstract

Chronic pain in algoses and algic neuroses are characterized by the persistent experience of pain even though its somatic source has disappeared. The author proposes the hypothesis that a "phantom pain" is kept in order to maintain a cathexis which has become necessary for the cohesion of the ego. ©Presses Universitaires de France.
