Abstract

Aspects of the external morphology, breeding biology, and population ecology were examined for a population of L. ewingi near Wellington. This population has diverged morphologically from populations in Australia and the Manawatu. Between March 1982 and April 1983, the following events during the breeding cycle were observed: nuptial pads were present on most males throughout the study period, males called in all months except January and February, aquatic amplexus and spawning commenced July; tadpoles were present throughout the year, and newly metamorphosed frogs from December to April. Mark- recapture data revealed breeding-related changes in both the numbers and distribution of adult males. © 1985 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
