Nota sobre los rostros de la plebe romana

Abstract

Frente a la hostilidad de la mayoría de los autores antiguos y la indiferencia de muchos historiadores modernos, el estudio de la plebe romana durante la República exige hoy un planteamiento innovador. Junto a los aspectos políticos y sociales más tratados, distintos autores antiguos (poetas, biógrafos, anticuarios), nuevos acercamientos a la ciudad de Roma (con la taberna como elemento central de la sociabilidad plebeya) y diferentes temas (el ocio, la oralidad, la cultura y religiosidad populares) contribuyen a un conocimiento más completo de una realidad compleja y heterogénea.Against the hostility of most of the ancient authors and the lack of interest of many modern historians, the study of the Roman plebs in Republican Rome demands today a renewed approach. Besides well-known political and social aspects, different sources (poets, biographers, antiquarians), new perspectives about the city of Rome (with taberna as central element in the plebeian social life) and new subjects (spare time, orality, popular culture and religion) will help us gain new and deeper insight in this complex phenomenon.
