Exploring the Growth of Sustainable Homes and Sustainability: A Review

Abstract

Sustainable housing is centred on resource-efficient design and architecture, uses materials that improve energy efficiency, preserve water, and integrate renewable energy sources. It addresses resource scarcity and climate change while minimizing its negative effects on the environment and fostering a higher standard of living. This study aims to provide a bibliometric analysis by combining a thorough literature review with an analysis of the knowledge currently available on sustainable housing. For the methodological strategy, analysing and retrieving data, we have determined the keyword (sustainable homes), reviewed 166 articles on sustainable homes published in Scopus, and employed a hybrid methodology to comprehend the development and expanding pattern of studies on sustainable housing, integrating content analysis with bibliometric analysis. This review provides insights not previously fully captured or evaluated by other reviews on this topic, including key authors, key journals, and the prestige of the reviewed papers. Using rigorous bibliometric and visualization tools, we identified five research clusters, including the need for home gardens, urban development using IoT, environment-related topics and sustainable home practices. Based on the clusters identified, we carried out further content analysis, identifying research gaps and proposing actionable directions for future research. The findings provide a robust roadmap for further investigation in this field.
