Factors affecting academic performance of library and information science undergraduates

Abstract

This paper examined some factors affectingacademic performance oflibrary and information science undergraduates. It adopted a review research design. It analysed and discussed some negative factors such as: inadequate time management; lack of self-motivation; poor reading and study habit; difficulty grasping course materials; test anxiety that leads to poor performance on examinations; emotional dis-stability factors: bullying, insult and false allegation; procrastination on assignments; inconsistent class attendance; financial constraints; students learning difference; lack of adequate planning; and discrimination or harassment by library staff.The paper concluded that effort should be intensified to check and ensure that those challenging factors prevalent among the undergraduate students are corrected by the university management and should ensure that undergraduate students are properly managed when using the educational resources stocked in the university librariesin order for students to achieve theirdesired target towards their academic performance in the university It is therefore suggested that the university library management should continue to promote values such as good leadership style and provision of adequate financial support to improve the acquisition of more relevant and current educational resources that would meet the educational needs of students and thereby enable them to achieve their expectations toward their academic performance.
