Abstract
In the early 19th century, Guillaume Dupuytren described a flexion contracture in the palm and its surgical release. Since then, advances in understanding of the etiology, pathophysiology, anatomy, and surgical technique have refined the ability to restore function to those affected. By fully comprehending the pathoanatomy involved, careful surgical excision can lead to satisfactory results. Complication and recurrence rates, however, require that time be spent with patients preoperatively to educate them and adequately explain treatment goals.
