Abstract

This chapter reviews what is currently known about self-help weight loss treatment programs. These programs are classified into one of two groups: "traditional" self-help programs, which utilize written materials, and internet-based self-help programs, which contain features accessible only via the internet. The specific features of the programs are described with a focus on the myriad differences among the programs. Extant evidence supporting the programs is reviewed. Limitations of the programs are highlighted, and suggestions for addressing these limitations are presented. Finally, recommendations are provided for clinicians who work with individuals pursuing self-help weight loss options. © 2011 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
