Abstract
Objective: This study explores how combining biophilic design with smart technologies can improve climate resilience and promote sustainable urban growth in Muscat, Oman. It employs spatial and empirical methods to create a strategic framework suitable for hot-arid cities, which aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. Theoretical Framework: The research is founded upon the principles of biophilic urbanism, nature-based solutions (NBS), and smart city theory. It employs the frameworks established by Beatley (2016), Browning et al. (2014), and Oman Vision 2040 to offer the contextual foundation for evaluating climate-adaptive planning. Method: A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating GIS-based spatial analysis (utilizing ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, and satellite imagery), field observations, and an examination of planning documents. Three urban districts—Al Khuwair, Muttrah, and Seeb—were selected to exemplify diverse urban typologies and developmental trajectories. Results and Discussion: The study revealed differences in vegetation, thermal comfort, and infrastructure across three districts. Al Khuwair shows moderate retrofitting potential, Muttrah benefits from passive cooling with dense vernacular architecture, and Seeb faces high UHI exposure and limited greenery. The discussion links urban form to spatial performance and suggests opportunities for integrated interventions. Research Implications: The findings inform policy formulation and strategic planning in Muscat and comparable Gulf cities. They indicate that district-specific solutions integrating biophilic and smart technologies can improve walkability, energy efficiency, and overall quality of life. In alignment with SDG 11, this research advocates for sustainable urban development and climate-resilient initiatives at both local and global levels. Originality/Value: This research introduces a scalable urban model that combines digital innovation with ecological design, specifically adapted for hot-arid environments. It not only addresses existing theoretical gaps but also offers practical strategies to achieve the sustainability goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040. The alignment of this research with Oman Vision 2040 affirms its relevance and applicability, and it has the potential to foster innovative solutions in urban planning and sustainability. The inclusion of SDG 11 further emphasizes its global significance and relevance.
