Abstract
A brief review is given of the conceptual and technological progress achieved in various areas of physics due to the extensive use of a new class of fibers, whose cladding consists of an array of hollow silica fibers fused and processed at a high temperature. The main properties of such fibers are considered and their application to physical problems is discussed.
